Vincy Arts and Crafts

The art and craft scene in St. Vincent is in the process of evolution. A wide variety of unique local arts and crafts can be found throughout Kingstown particularly at the Artisans Craft Shop and The Bounty Restaurant and Art Gallery on Egmont Street. A visit to the new Kingstown Market and shopping mall can also produce some fruitful findings, from jewellery to wood carvings.

Venturing out of town on the leeward coast, head towards Wallilabou Village, where you will find the fascinating Wallilabou Craft Centre
(tel: 784-456-0078). Established in 1986 as a co-operative of local villagers, the centre provides training in various techniques of straw and weaving using fibers from pandanas and wiss plants. Workers there are involved in the process of weaving a variety of baskets, handbags, hats and even children’s toys. The women’s motto tells it all: “In every piece of our craft lies a story of interaction with the environment through creativity and open hearts.

Fibreworks, in the Buccament Valley, operates in the rural community of Penniston.  Tel: 784-456-7118 or 784-494-4040. The enterprise, founded in 1997 by artist/designer Vonnie Roudette, utilizes the local materials and human resources to create unique hand-crafted items that arc authentic reflections of the environment and its people. You can reach Fibreworks by e-mailing them at  giftsofnature.fibreworks@gmail.com

Who says you  can't take back a piece of this island with you?
Peter Providence through his detailed and captivating artwork enables you to do just that. Over the years Peter's inborn talent has taken root and as a result the most enchanting scenes have blossomed into lasting memories captured on canvas. Stand back, admire and lose yourself in the memory. More of Peter's work may be viewed at www.geocities.com/proviart

The island is also home to a divergent group of artists, producing marvellous works of art ranging from Josette Norñs’ indigenous jewellery and Nzimbu Browne’s banana art to Gary Peters’ watercolours and the oil paintings of Joseph Esquina and Lennox “Dinks” Johnson.

You can find many of their works on the walls of The Bounty (currently the only active gallery on the island) or contact them directly with the details found on the following pages.

You may also visit the website for Castello Art Design Ltd, Union Island. Tel: 784-485-8177

Recently, more recognition has been given to the small groups of individual artists and craftspeople. A couple of locally formed groups, SVG Create (a registered NGO) and Creative Caribbean have created e-commerce websites dedicated to art and craft www.creativecaribbean.com and www.gligli.com

Internet users throughout the world now have a chance to view and purchase Vincy crafts and art work.

The St.Vincent & the Grenadines Visual Arts Society  was officially founded on December 3, 2003 in order to encourage the development of the Visual Arts in SVG and their diffusion abroad.

It also offered local artists help and promotion by organizing exhibitions and other events. One of its project was an "Art Awareness Workshop" (March 9 & 10 2005)  for the Kindergarten teachers at the national level, funded by the British High Commission.

The aim of the St.Vincent & the Grenadines Visual Arts Society was to make teachers aware of the importance of the Visual Arts in St.Vincent and to actively introduce them in the schools at an early stage.
